Matsuda: the Japanese eyewear revolution

Introduction to the brand

It all began in the 1960s, when Mitsuhiro Matsuda started experimenting with western design and with the study of traditional Japanese fashion.

As a result of this interesting combination, Matsuda created an ready-to-wear line with a deep connection between the past and a vision to the future.
Mitsuhiro Matsuda found inspiration in Gothic architecture, Victorian art, and American jazz and he was one of the first designers to create a connection between architecture
and fashion.
With fifty years of experimentation and creative evolution, today Matsuda is an iconic brand that valorizes each frame in order to produce only unique models. Made in Japan
One of the main characteristics of Matsuda designs is that they are crafted by hand in the eyewear workshops of Sabae, Japan.

The process requires up to two years and 250 steps and the result is a little piece of art with an extreme attention to details and a balanced combination of fine materials.
Matsuda designs are mainly made of titanium, stainless steel, sterling silver, and 18k solid gold.

For the acetate frames, Matsuda uses exclusively organic plastic derived from cotton and cured for over three months.
The master Japanese craftsmen transform raw materials into iconic pieces, through specific techniques that need years of experience and practice. That is what truly makes
the difference: always choosing craftsmanship over mass production.
Each piece is hand-finished in order to produce a remarkably soft feel, sculpted for a lifetime of hard use; the process is slow and it needs accuracy and patience but produces unique eyewear designs that will last over time.

Our Matsuda selection

In a world that emphasizes immediacy, Matsuda chooses tradition and attention to details. Matsuda philosophy is based on the Japanese approach of combining handcrafted techniques and innovative technology.
Innovation and experimentation have been a part of Matsuda’s main values since Mitsuhiro Matsuda founded the fashion house in Tokyo.

Matsuda was already a well-known fashion brand in Japan when he launched the first eyewear collection in 1989 and his eyewear creations immediately captured the attention of the entire world.
Matsuda’s campaigns boast collaborations with big artists, such as Nan Goldin, Jan Saudek, Juergen Teller and Bruce Weber that have helped to build the strong reputation that the brand has today.
To have a better idea of Matsuda's refined style, take a look at this model made of lightweight titanium, shaped to create fluid lines and a cutting-edge design.

This model is an interesting example of the combination between Japanese acetate and beta titanium; it is available as both optical frames and sunglasses.
Matsuda designs are extremely modern but at the same time always tied to Japanese traditions: that is why we can call it an eyewear revolution, because the real
innovation is to bring the past into a new future where craftsmanship has more value than fast production.
