How to take care of your eyes: five tips to always remember

Your eyes are important and deserve your attention. For this reason, it is essential to know how to take care of your eyes in order to prevent diseases and vision loss.

Here there are five simple tips that you can follow to keep your eyes healthy and improve the quality of your vision:

  1. Stay hydrated. To drink enough water every day is important for the general health of your body and also to avoid dry eye and eye fatigue. Drink eight to ten glasses of water every day to keep your body (and your eyes) hydrated. Other than drinking a fair amount of water on an everyday basis, if you want to keep your eyes hydrated you should also remember to blink when you use your computer and stay away from cigarette smoke.

  1. Wear sunglasses. Sun damage is a serious issue that unfortunately is often underestimated. Whenever you stay outside you need UV protection for your eyes. This is why sunglasses are not only a cool accessory but more importantly they are a protection for your eyes. Always choose eyewear with UV protection and do not forget to wear them.

  1. Eat healthy food. A healthy diet can prevent eye diseases. In particular, oily fish, such as salmon, offers a high level of Omega-3 that can prevent or reverse dry eye. Nuts are also rich in Omega-3 acids and they also contain Vitamin E, which protects the eyes from age-related damage. Carrots are good for your eyes because they are rich in beta carotene, that it is important to produce vitamin A that helps the retina to absorb light. Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and kale, are a good source of vitamin C that provides structure to your eyes.

  1. Plan your next eye exam. Generally speaking, you should get your eyes checked every one or two years. However, it really depends on your age, eye condition and risk factors. You should get exams as often as your health care provider recommends it. An eye exam can help to prevent and to diagnose in an early stage a medical condition. For this reason, you should not underestimate the importance of eye exams and take care of your eyes even if your vision is good.

  1. Use eyewear with protective lenses. You should wearprotective lenses eyewear because they are a defense against eye injuries.  In addition, protective glasses can protect your eyes from the unsafe light of monitors and prevent from what is called Computer Vision Syndrome, which can lead to pain in the eyes and blurred vision. A good solution for those who do a computer-related job is to buy eyewear with blue light blocking lenses.
